Granted, I have children and watch way too many bubble gum fad flicks. However, this one caught my interest quickly. I expected a "Disney-Dokota-Fanning-ish" type of movie... no way, not even close. A little fantasy edge in a very entertaining action theme. I just wanted to spend time with my kids and watch a movie not expecting to find another potential FP4 classic.

SYNOPSIS: Based on a book by Wendy Orr, a girl and her dad reside on a beautiful island in paradise. She spends her days learning about nature and science while her dad explores and writes research papers on ocean creatures. Through a series of events, her father is capsized at sea and leaving her alone... all while an email of the daughter beckons an unlikely rescue by one of her favorite action novelist. Suddenly, the island isn't as private as it once was. (Jodie Foster, Abigail Breslen [little miss sunshine], and Gerard Butler)

Scope: This is one for the whole family to enjoy. May want to sit everyone down on a rainy fall evening and watch this together. It may be a stretch to name this movie beside "Treasure Island" but with all the crappy movies for kids in the last several years, it's great to see some respect for intelligent rhetoric and clean cinema for children. Enjoy!

<img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; This one won't disappoint if you are a fan of his. However, the sizzle behind this movie is not the character development but the segue of the movie's content from Tarantino-ish plot build-up to something Socrates might teach in philosophy.

SYNOPSIS: I can tell you about the plot and the setting but nothing can really prepare you for the core content of the movie. Our main character, Mr. Green, finds himself released from incarceration after many years in solitary confinement. Adjacent cell-mates were able to communicate to Mr. Green and prepare him for his transition back into the public life. Mr. Green comes back prepared to control his destiny and settle old scores. However, fate has a very different role in mind for his purpose in life.

Scope: If you don't like the artist/director manipulating you into a vulnerable position as a viewer, you won't like the movie. If you don't like Aronofsky like cinematography (Requiem for a Dream), you will perhaps be annoyed by some of shots. However, I can assure you, it isn't a David Lynch type ending - there is closure... just not the predictable closure most lazy movies give into.

<img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; It starts out with his simple and fulfilling lifestyle. However, due to the sins of the earth, we see the weakness of humans. Sonny goes through turmoil and is forced under harsh conditions and then family & personal dysfunctions surface... all leading to regrettable actions. It's evident that the movie's focus is not about religion but about life, trials and tribulations. We may not be able to stop the things that happen to us (sickness, transgressions, etc...) but we can try to control our reactions and attitudes towards these situations. Our character, Sonny, reacts the way a majority of humans and animals would react but then transforms into something else. For example, have you ever meet someone who has a terminal illness and knows death is around the corner? Or someone who has been treated horribly and abused? A small few group of these victims possess the ability to be anything but a "victim." This small group of people are at complete peace and possess a power of self-fulfillment and are a testament to the fact that humans have the ability to rise above situations and deny normal, primitive and savage behavior. Most people have probably seen it since the reviewers and awards are spewing accolades to this independent film. If you are one of the few people who haven't seen it yet, you are in for a treat.

SYNOPSIS: Starting out, I would say simply "WOW." This will be one of my favorite movies of all times. At the surface, it is a story about an unplanned, teenage pregnancy with a young girl named Juno (Ellen Page). She plays a wonderful roll and delivers the script with snappy but sarcastic remarks (which are familiar to Napoleon Dynamite's memorable & strange humor). The characters interactions with Juno only show off her witty personality of her character to a larger degree. "Juno" was made for Ellen Page's talents - the character fits her like a glove. The movie has an almost "dark humor" approach to this very serious matter - you may find yourself laughing at certain lines and scenes that don't seem politically correct or find your self amused at inappropriate times and be chuckling to one's self with a little embarrassment. However, at one very specific moment in the movie, Jason Bateman's character causes a strange tide change to the feeling of the movie. The movie seems to lightly bring you into a teenager's naive view of parenthood and then into her head during a very heavy moment. It's a moment in time when the realization of the awesome responsibility of bringing a child into the world (even with the plan of giving the baby for adoption) and her one small decision could greatly affect this future of a person's life.

Scope: Please don't approach this movie with thoughts of pro-life or pro-abortion issues. Thank you very much. You'll be missing the point. It is a coming of age movie for a character that shouldn't have to come of age in her maturity level. You will like this movie if sarcasm and witty humor fits your taste. The reviews lend the thought that a wide audience range could enjoy this movie. I agree. I would warn that some of the dialog and situations could be offending to some. However, take a chance, this could become one of your favorites too!

<img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; chronological approach to several dogs and their owners as they prepare to go to a national dog show in Philadelphia. The film gives a small glimpse of the world of championship dog breeding and training. However, this is only the canvas for Christopher Guest to portray the personalities of the dog owners... the cast all play some neurotic, crazy or simply silly personalities. There is a story line as all the dogs (and their crazy owners) prepare to participate in the coveted "best in show" prize. But it is a crazy train right up to the end. My favorite character is the announcer for the show played by Fred Willard.

Scope: This movie is my favorite "mock-u-mentary" film. It has a great cast of very talented actors and actresses. If you like dogs, ever owned a dog, there is a good chance you love this film. *Please note that there is SOME crude and sexual humor... even in the opening scene. However, it is not over bearing in the movie-depends on your tolerance level. The humor is also very dry so if your looking for stand up comedy type of delivery, this is not for you. The plot is not light by any means and has some very deep and emotional aspects that you would expect from a philosophy book. HOWEVER, it is based on a true story which has a draw in itself. I am highly recommending the book also as it fills in the blanks much better than the movie does.

SYNOPSIS: The movie centers around our main character, Chris McCandless (a.k.a. Alexander Supertramp). Chris gives up his material life after graduation and disappears from his former life to explore nature at it's finest. Though he left to escape human contact, he finds himself still very drawn to relationships with people that take him trustingly into their lives along the way. However, his ultimate goal, was to spend a summer in Alaska and living off the land... alone, very alone. This is the physical journey. There is a sub-plot that follow a philosophical view of survival, mortality, religion and, off course, a heavy dose of social psychology/dysfunction mixed in.

Scope: If you don't enjoy nature... if you don't see even small spiritual connections when you hiking, camping, etc... the movie may not be right for you. However, if you have a strong draw to be outdoors and view God's creation close up and see natural wonders and scenery, this could be a winner for you. It does take somewhat a light approach to "living of the land" and leaving society behind. However, it crosses over to a transcendental side that asks some probing questions about risk-taking, shutting society out, forgiveness for loved ones, finding yourself through nature, anger, connecting with nature and God. It is an awesome story simply because it is a true story... though not a happy ending...... I have known a few "Alex Supertramps" in my life... and there is a lot of parallels in this story to them and their lives.

<img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; Close friends who know me would say this is one of my "bizarre" movies. But read on...

SYNOPSIS: Three brothers who have be estranged for over a year, meet, reunite, and find their spiritual center. Set in the backdrop of a juxtaposed area of India, the trio turns from meagerly associated brothers to trusting each other like brothers should. Though they take too many painkillers, cough medicine and engage in strange risks, they seem to come out ahead in the end. It seems like a heavy plot but really the movie's success is the quiet humor, the punchy script, awesome actors, well chosen cast members and ABSOLUTELY AWESOME CAMERA WORK!

Scope: If you liked the script and the story lines of "The Life Aquatic," "Rushmore," "The Royal Tenenbaums," then this may be a good match for you. The SMART camera work must be my biggest reason for the pick this week: So much attention to lighting, appropriate camera affects with zooming, slo-mo, rolling shots, etc... only enhanced the cinematic experience. The intriguing, conflict-creating dialog along with the juxtaposed visuals and colors only added to the curious draw I had to the movie. The characters that are built from the short intro story (which was awesome portrayal with Natalie Portman) in the beginning through the plot development towards the end of the film also become a plus. Kudos to Owen Wilson (who obviously was on his own personal journey in real life during this film), Adrien Brody and Jason Schwartzman (nephew of Francis Ford Coppola). Warning to anyone that can't swallow some experimental film making... don't waste your time.

(Subscribe here for feeds to your news)

See rules of blog at very bottom of this post: http://zozfp4.blogspot.com/2007_10_01_archive.html

FP4 pick of the week

The Beatles music lives on...

PICK #13: “Across The Universe” (2007) Director: Julie Taymore

Info & Trailer:

http://www.blockbuster.com/catalog/movieDetails/268731

or

http://www.netflix.com/Movie/Across_the_Universe/70045863

ENTRY: A rock opera for the next generation. The movie's leading characters, Jude and Lucy, are the forefront of a movie that parallels the different stages of the Beatles music along the the political and cultural upheaval that happens in the 1960s. The actors were obviously chosen for their musical and singing capabilities. The story is moving in itself but is enhanced with the lyrical and musical influence of the Beatles. Don't expect a carbon copied version of the songs however. My favorite was Bono singing "I am the Walrus" as he portrays a Timothy Leary type character.

Scope: If you liked the WHO's "Tommy" or Pink Floyd's "The Wall" then this might be the movie for you. I think you also have to hold an affection for the Beatles and some of their earlier music. It is a musical but only in a light way. There is still lots of dialog but the action and plot mixes with the music and choreography in the movie. It's a must see if you are a Beatles fan. If you don't know if you are a Beatles music lover, I think you will still enjoy the movie from the plot and the political and social themes. Let me know what you think.

(Subscribe here for feeds to your news)

See rules of blog at very bottom of this post: http://zozfp4.blogspot.com/2007_10_01_archive.html

FP4 pick of the week

"The Dude" has words of wisdom for one and all

PICK #12: “The Big Lebowski” (1998) Director: Joel Coen

Info & Trailer:
http://www.blockbuster.com/catalog/movieDetails/115093

or

http://www.netflix.com/Movie/The_Big_Lebowski/1181532?strkid=694495589_0_0

ENTRY: Thought I would lighten it up with a smart comedy this week. A classic Coen film.

SYNOPSIS: Mistaken identity is the setting for this movie. "The Dude" gets pulled into a tangled web. He lives a simple life but get pulled further into the creepy and strange world of a rich man by the same name. It gets freaky from time to time with great character profiles.

Scope: I love the Coen's and this movie is on the top of my "Coen list." If you liked Fargo, O Brother Where Art Thou, Barton Fink, Raising Arizona, No Country for Old Men, etc... then this one needs to be added to your list. This is a comedy, yes. But be forewarned that it is considered by most a "dark-comedy" or at least a little off-color. There is some light violence and sexual situations. If you like suspense, mystery (with a healthy sprinkling of comedy) then this is combo for you. I know I have been picking some older movies recently but be assured, this one is worth the step back in time. A must see for the dark-comedy lovers. The cast has some incredible names: John Goodman,Jeff Bridges, Julianne Moore, Steve Buscemi, etc.... Let me know what you think!!!

(Subscribe here for feeds to your news)

See rules of blog at very bottom of this post: http://zozfp4.blogspot.com/2007_10_01_archive.html

FP4 pick of the week

Love for a woman, music, and the instrument

PICK #11: “The Red Violin” (1998) Director: Francois Girard

Info & Trailer:
http://www.blockbuster.com/catalog/movieDetails/129368

or

http://www.netflix.com/Movie/The_Red_Violin/5670353?strkid=1620467862_0_0

ENTRY: After starting this blog a few months ago, I received several recommendations in return (which is a fringe benefit of the blog). This one, frankly, has been head and shoulders even above my own picks since FP4 started. This is a true winner.

SYNOPSIS: A long lost, hand-crafted violin from the Renaissance era is the central theme in this movie. The story follows the instrument from player to player... though the instrument carries a long held secret through the centuries that waits to be unearthed. The passionate and tremendous journey is a gripping tale. I can't give away more of this plot away... sorry. Let's just say that the scenes (along with the instrument) span the centuries well and across multiple societies.

Scope: I absolutely adored this movie. There is no other word for it. As far as a scope, you must be a romantic OR at the least, an aspiring Romeo/Juliet. If you have ever been in love, this movie is for you. It's not a overly sappy love story you might see in the theater. It's not that trite. If you don't mind the sub-titled during certain scenes in the film, you'll enjoy this film. It is shot partly in classical film during the "flash backs" and then jumps ahead to modern day scenes also. The story lines envelope themes of love, passion, obsession, music, and much more. It is a more than worthy of the academy award winner. Thank you for the person that recommended this to me! It is the best I have seen in quite a while. I hope you agree.

(Subscribe here for feeds to your news)

See rules of blog at very bottom of this post: http://zozfp4.blogspot.com/2007_10_01_archive.html

FP4 pick of the week

War, peace, arms sales... what's your take?

PICK #10: “Lord or War” (2005) Director: Andrew Niccol

Info & Trailer:
http://www.blockbuster.com/catalog/movieDetails/254719

or

http://www.netflix.com/Movie/Lord_of_War/70038796?strkid=1151747238_0_0

ENTRY: I recently recommended this movie to a friend for the surround sound and the cinematography. It's a winner on that note. Lord of War is a movie that you will love or hate. It tackles the personal profile and a side of a man who is deep inside the world of warfare. It tackles some tough issues but leaves the final analysis to you for to decide.

SYNOPSIS: Nicholas Cage was looking for a way to make a living. You might say he lived on the notion "find a need... fulfill it." He does that in a big way. And it he plays both sides of the war too. As you go through the movie and see him make arms deals, you may decide that some are more "ethical" than others... but why is that? You will have to decide. Not a huge surprising plot but lots of action and moderate violence. The movie is really a "profile" of a man that makes the world of war go round. I hope you like it.

Scope: This will sound a little generalized but if you love war movies and war technology, you will like this. Also, if you challenge the idea of warfare over peaceful resolution, you may also like this. This is because it raises tough questions like "why blame the gun or missile for war - it's the person pulling the trigger." I have mixed emotions on this subject so don't ask for my final analysis. It is a great movie for home theaters and has lots of great surround sound and great cinematography. If you can watch it on HD DV or Blue Ray, hold on to your seat because it will be good.

(Subscribe here for feeds to your news)

See rules of blog at very bottom of this post: http://zozfp4.blogspot.com/2007_10_01_archive.html

FP4 pick of the week

A little Tim Burton for you...
...Tall tales tell no lies?

PICK #9: “Big Fish” (2003) Director: Tim Burton

Info & Trailer:
http://www.netflix.com/Movie/Big_Fish/60031268?strkid=1703699852_0_0

ENTRY: Welcome to week number 10. Sorry about missing last week but I will make up for it by doing one Monday and one on Friday. We have a story-telling type of movie. I am a Tim Burton fan, yes. However, I realize that a lot of people don't really go for his movies. This one is what I consider a little conservative for him (but conservative is a matter of opinion).

SYNOPSIS: This is a series of somewhat interconnecting tall tales that are threaded with "reality" and the "tall-tale" storyline. Ewan McGregor and Helen Bonham-Carter stand out as the strong actors in the movie who portray most of the "story-line." The movie starts with very separated boundaries between reality and the dream world. However, by the end, the two are meshed together.

Scope: Having recently viewed this movie, I realized how much of a potential classic it might become. I have been trying to work this into the blog at some point. If you have seen Tim Burton movies and hated them, this one is not for you. If you haven't seen any of his movies, this is a good starting point before moving in the bazaar world of Eraser Head or Nightmare Before Christmas. The storyline does have some great themes which are intertwined around a very intense love triangle. If you are going to connect to the movie, you will find it isn't exactly a comedy or a drama but a little of both. Enjoy.

(Subscribe here for feeds to your news)

See rules of blog at very bottom of this post: http://zozfp4.blogspot.com/2007_10_01_archive.html

FP4 pick of the week

Fantasy and Sci-Fi Freaks, listen up

PICK #9: “Stardust” (2007) Director: Matthew Vaughn

Info & Trailer:
http://www.blockbuster.com/catalog/movieDetails/280767

OR
http://www.netflix.com/Movie/Stardust/70054920?strkid=1415402589_0_0

ENTRY: Week 9's pick is a good one because it reaches across several audiences and demographics. It may be my top movie for you from all of the blog entries so far. The line up of stars in the movie is reason enough to see it, let alone a very captivating story and incredible cinematography and believable C.G.I. graphics.

SYNOPSIS: With a line up of Claire Danes, Robert De Niro, Michelle Pfeiffer, Charlie Cox, Sienna Miller - you can't go wrong. However, the theme of the movie and plot is another added bonus to make this a worth while purchase or rental. A young boy, growing up in a modest town, finds out what is beyond his city's walls. What he thought was true love, ends up being his path into another city and dimensions unlike he ever imagined. He ventures to what he thinks was a falling star... and let's stop there or I will ruin it for you. Robert De Niro plays a sky pirate which helps the couple on their way (he steps up to his part in the movie and throws in some light comedy). Michelle Pfeiffer steals the show, however, as the nemesis who is out to spoil the lovers plans. Side plots abound in this story which are easy to follow and enhance the movie.

Scope: This is a movie for most ages which is hard to find these days. There are some scary scenes for youngsters (under the age of 10 perhaps). If you enjoy Fantasy or Sci-Fi, even slightly, you will enjoy this movie. If you liked Lady Hawk, Princess Bride or Time Bandits - this movie is for you. I know it is going on my "to buy list" very soon. It is not heavy into Sci-Fi or even Fantasy except for the situational plot. Most everything in the movie feels believable and you don't have to try and crawl into a science fiction state of mind like with Anime'. Enjoy... let me know what you think!

(Subscribe here for feeds to your news)

See rules of blog at very bottom of this post: http://zozfp4.blogspot.com/2007_10_01_archive.html

FP4 pick of the week

Throw another shrimp on the Bar-B! However, it’s not your J-Lo meets hunk kinda crap. It’s more of a blue collar approach to real world love. I think a lot of my picks so far have lacked a comical and casual feel so I wanted to pick something we all need this time of the year, something with some laughs yet with some believable and practical inspiration. It’s not quite a love flick but not quite a comedy either.

SYNOPSIS: Danny is a work-a-holic truck driver who lives in the modest suburbia setting of Sydney, Australia. Danny loves his job, perhaps too much. His girl friend is a successful business woman. However the relationship has perhaps reached its peak. Danny finally decides to take a vacation from work and plans a get away to rekindle the relationship and reconnect with himself. When plans fall through, Danny finds his vacation plans ruined. During a “shrimp-on-the-B-B-Q” Australian type cookout, Danny sneaks away from his party. He decides to fasten helium balloons onto his lawn chair and strap himself in for an escape from the doldrums. Up and away... The story goes from here and the magic of this movie starts when he lands in a distant village after being carried by a violent thunderstorm. A little far fetched, I know, but somehow, in a strange way, still believable. The characters in the film are effective but the overwhelming comic relief comes from our hero, Danny. He is a cross between Jim Carrey and Roberto Benigni. I hope you enjoy him as much I did.

Scope: Did you like “The Full Monty” or “Liar-Liar”? This story follows somewhat the same themes so you should enjoy “Danny Deckchair.” You may find it refreshing just to view a film that isn’t out of the mechanical and formulaic Hollywood big houses that pump crap to us continually and without variety. The movie is from Australia but the dialog isn’t hard to follow except for seldom, obscure references and comments (which I sometimes get from heavy duty British films). It is a love story so you may want to be strategic about your companions when you watch it. It’s not one to pop in after the big football game with your drinking buddies. Sorry, but I don’t have a cut and dry SCOPE this week except to say, if you ever wanted to shake the “blahs” of life, you’ll connect with this movie’s purpose. If you are a believer in the power of fate of relationships, you’ll enjoy it even more. Oh yeah, if you like to laugh and need a comedy, this is a fairly safe bet. Let me know what you think!

(Subscribe here for feeds to your news)

See rules of blog at very bottom of this post: http://zozfp4.blogspot.com/2007_10_01_archive.html

FP4 pick of the week

Friday, December 7, 2007

FP4 entry 20071207

Award Winning Animation-FP4 pick of the week

PICK: “The Triplets of Belleville” (2003) Director: Sylvain Chomet

Info & Trailer: http://www.blockbuster.com/catalog/movieDetails/230981

OR
http://www.netflix.com/Movie/The_Triplets_of_Belleville/60032394?strkid=584196818_1_0

ENTRY: This week's pick is off on another detached tangent. It is an award winning animated feature length film. It won major awards from Boston, Copenhagen, France, Los Angeles, New York and Toronto. If you watch the film, you will quickly understand why the film received so much attention.

SYNOPSIS: The story is about a young boy (and his curious dog) who becomes very passionate about his bicycle riding. His grandmother encourages this behavior as he grows older. His goal is to race in the big one... the Tour de' France. His dreams are sidetracked in a peculiar way (I won't reveal too much so not to ruin the story for you). The plot has twists and turns that only add to the entertainment of the film.

Scope: If you enjoy traditional animation films, give this flick a try. You also might like the film if you are a highly competitive athlete because the story is about intense training towards a physical goal (through a satirical bird's eye view). The animation is entertaining and uncomplicated... it is not a high tech C.G.I. film and shouldn't be placed in the same category as "spirited away." So don't have high expectations in that area... just good old fashion animation. The characters, including the boy's dog, are developed in an effective and comical way. The grandmother, the triplets, the mafia boss and others are entertaining in their own little world of character introduction and development. Is it a comedy? Yes, it will offer some laughs but there is almost a dark comedy feel to the story line. Don't over-analyzed the plot or you may ruin it for yourself by doing so. It's kinda of like watching an episode of Seinfeld, the plot is unpredictable which is part of it's appeal. The film's story line is meant to be taken lightly just as an animated story should be. I would say that the movie is safe for most older children. There is one scene in the beginning with dancing girls that you may want to sensor out for the little tykes. Otherwise, it is fairly clean. It is over eighty minutes which may be longer than most animated features so be prepared for restlessness if young children are viewing it and have a short attention span (or some adults too!)

(Subscribe here for feeds to your news)

See rules of blog at very bottom of this post: http://zozfp4.blogspot.com/2007_10_01_archive.html

FP4 pick of the week - FP4 entry 20071130

Friday, November 30, 2007

FP4 entry 20071130

Krumpers UNITE!!! Our pick this week is “Stomp the Yard.” It is a movie I normally wouldn’t have gravitated towards but having many people in my life that enjoy the art of dance, I decided to give it a chance. Though I am far from being a professional dancer myself, I can appreciate passion for any form of art. I hope you aspire for the same.

SYNOPSIS: DJ Williams (Columbus Short) plays an exceptional role and does awsome character development which begins in the heart of the urban dance and club scene where many experimental dances begin today. After the tragic death of his closest brother, he carries a large level of guilt into his future. He pursues a college degree where he battles his roots against the compromising contradiction of conformity of college life. The step squad he joins with portrays struggles in a paradoxical way against the priority of brotherhood and the importance of team work which is pitted against the powerful force of personal identity and uniqueness. This, I am sure, is a struggle most professional or life-dedicated artists feel at some stage of their career.

SCOPE: You will enjoy this movie if you like the movie “Drum Line” or “Honey” as it tackles some of the same topics. You don’t necessarily need to be tied to classic dance to enjoy the movie. “Stomp the Yard” shows an alternative view of raw and basic passions of the urban struggles and lifestyle through dance. You may enjoy this movie if you enjoy alternative views to classic thought and classical education. It effectively questions the authority of team over individual needs. It’s rebellious in its thematic approach but at the same time embraces tradition and history. If long dance scenes in musicals have gotten boring to you, you may want to skip this one. But if you give it a chance I think you might be pleasantly surprised. I hope you like it! Let me know your thoughts if you do.

<!--[if gte vml 1]><v:shapetype id="_x0000_t75" coordsize="21600,21600" spt="75" preferrelative="t" path="m@4@5l@4@11@9@11@9@5xe" filled="f" stroked="f"> The FP4 entry this week is “fracture” with Anthony & Hopkins Ryan Gosling. The movie is has a well chosen cast for the plot. It’s not your typical horror flick with Hopkins however. It’s more of a suspense/mystery genre. The scope this week is a little more concrete and definitive compared to the last two weeks.

SYNOPSIS: The movie stars Hopkins as a professional engineer with a lovely wife. Hopkins finds himself obsessed with his wife’s external and private life. His love for her borders on obsession and wanting to control and possess her. He perhaps suffers from OCD or is just plain insane in the membrane which he takes to the extreme. The story doesn't take long to take off so an impatient viewer will be very satisfied with this pick.

I can’t tell you a lot about the plot but I can assure you the twists and turns are not forced and create a natural feeling & flow to the story. At the end, you will not feel manipulated or mislead in the ending. The nemesis for Hopkins is a hot shot assistant D.A. that is exiting the public service for a prestigious private practice. However, he decides to take one last case before he leaves (simply because he wants the challenge to bring down Hopkin's character). However, this emotional decision he makes puts his future in jeopardy not only with the DA but his potential new job. The two lead actors go head to head in a dangerous game that will have detrimental affects on either party if they loose their legal battle. The conflict does not center on the court room like you might find with a John Grishim book or film (which becomes quite boring). The story centers more on the minute by minute developments in the plot and will suck you into the story.

Scope: You will enjoy this flick pick if you like Anthony Hopkins. He plays the role beautifully and seems effortless to slip into this script. If you like mystery, suspense and plot development, you won’t be disappointed. You tend to be a person that enjoys reading books that are in the same story genre. You may dislike gruesome horror or murder mysteries... this movie a has tasteful orientation which tones down the visual shock. Hope you enjoy it! Love to hear your feedback.

(Subscribe here for feeds to your news)

See rules of blog at very bottom of this post: http://zozfp4.blogspot.com/2007_10_01_archive.html

FP4 entry 20071116

STEEEEEELLLLLLLLLAAAAAAAA!!!!! FP4 pick of the week

PICK: “The Night of the Iguana” (1964) Director: John Huston, Original stage production: Tennessee Williams

Info & Trailer: http://www.blockbuster.com/catalog/movieDetails/24813 (sorry, no trailer that I could locate)
OR
http://www.netflix.com/Movie/The_Night_of_the_Iguana/60011275?strkid=975714856_0_0

ENTRY: This week’s pick delves into a traditional screen play format… and yes, it is a classic and untouched by Ted Turner’s silly tecni-puke-colored crayons. It’s from ’64 which is before high budget movies and elaborate special affects. As you may know the success of a live production at this period was solely based on the content of the plot and script along side of the quality of the performance… I am challenging you to take a step back in time and truly enjoy a story telling/stage experience… so many people today are lazy MTV viewers that are only taken in by lighting fast scene changes, subliminal absorption, over simplified plots and lots of eye candy. Welcome back to the age of jive my friends. Please pay close attention to the scope so you are not wasting your time watching the movie. I chose this movie based on several elements. One, the original script, if untouched, would have outperformed Tennessee Williams hits in “streetcar” and “cat on a hot tin roof.” Many of T.W. plays were taken to the big screen. This one however deserves much more attention that it received in the theatres. T.W. is the master at creating continual conflict and constant social and sometimes sexual tension between characters. Often his focus of the main characters shifts and goes beyond social psychology issues and takes you inside the character’s thoughts and internal struggles. This holds true with this weeks pick more than most of his “plays converted to movies.” (and there were lots of these, some made for TV only)

SYNOPSIS: Richard Burton & Ava Gardner… a good thespian combination for the setting of this flick. Filmed on location in Mexico at Puerto Vallarta, the scenery and the backdrop becomes a big part of the feeling of the movie. The lead, Rev. Shannon is a tired and exasperated priest who is making a meager living as tour guide via bus. His busload of occupants are entertaining in the movie… a group of fundamental conservative teachers on holiday (along with one very passionate and “coming of age” young vixen who plays the part of one of Shannon’s antagonists) The group takes refuge at the earthy and run down resort which is run by Maxine – a close and long time friend of the Rev. Shannon. At first, the group is just happy for a bed to rest in but as time progresses, the teachers protest against the clergy’s plan for a long, multi-day siesta. Other characters enter and the story becomes more like an episode of “survivor” or a day time soap opera instead of being a beachfront resort… they don’t seem to be on holiday as there is constant conflict among the group. The themes of the movie are strung throughout the movie… redemption, religion, spirituality, forgiveness, eternal salvation, shame, denial, love, loneliness… Play close attention to the elderly poet as he recites his prose finale. This poem embodies the message that Tennessee wanted to portray about life. A defrocked priest trying to find sanctuary in his soul is the backdrop to this moving film. The details of the captured “iguana parallel” is not a clearly defined to Rev. Shannon struggles and leaves some room for interpretation. Guess what? This week’s pick MAY have a happy ending… you will have wait and see. If you don’t mind reading, you may want to locate a copy of the play and read it because it is much more robust and detailed in dialog.

Scope: You will be a good target for this movie if you enjoy any of Tennessee William’s plays/films. There are some similarities with this script among his vast collection. But this one symbolizes an authoring shift in TW’s creativity and thematic content which took TW in a writing tangent only now realized in hindsight. Some say this play exposes more about TW’s own internal turmoil than past productions. For those under the age of 30 or unaware of TW, well, I will need to give you a little more to go on for this scope. You enjoy visual art and still-life. You enjoy the healing and nurturing feeling from a day at the beach and in the sunlight. You may also have a friend or family member that has dedicated their life to serving as a clergy or has a life commitment to a “social-working” affiliation or calling. You most likely are intrigued by social psychology and the nature/nurture argument. You may or may not be religious but you are mostly enamored by the thought of mortality. You value the various elements in life that create an emotional sanctuary and recollected tranquility. You realize that humans are not perfect and you embrace the ying/yang of life’s experiences. Forgiveness for you is not always about forgetting but more about an act of compassion. Most of all, in conclusion to this scope, you have freely forgiven someone in your life that didn’t really deserve it (perhaps yourself?).
I promised a pick for my blog visitors on a more earthy tone and to satisfy visually coarse viewers. Though it's not a horror or slasher movie, I got the perfect one for you. It is not so extreme that other profiles/viewers won’t enjoy it however. This is one of my personal flick favorites and it was given as a gift from my brother-in-law after his graduation from Brattleboro, VT Peace Corp Masters ESL program. Ironically, the movie is very un-peace-corp like but it does raise some interesting scenarios and how life can deal a lousy hand of cards once and a while. The story speaks for itself.

SYNOPSIS: The movie is SPANISH and can be watched with or without subtitles. However, I usually despise sub-titles but this film helped me get past that. As a viewer, most of the movie is about absorbing the action and character interaction on the screen anyway. Not a large amount of dialog is needed to be involved with the story. You could watch it with out knowing Spanish or reading subtitles and find it rewarding all the same. The movie is not your regular antagonistic plot approach (which is refreshing in itself). Another warning… it is however, visually disturbing at times. There are some scenes that Michael Vick may have been motivated by in his recent escapades. There is "suggested" scenes that portray animals in a painful situation. Animal lovers might cringe at this... a warning to my one friend that can't watch this type of movie :-) The creative elements of the movie are more about three intertwined character sketches. The characters themselves are where the common theme applies. “Amores Perros” means “life is a bitch” or the “love of a dog.” That translation is very true in the movie… the story has a raw and abrasive side all while maintaining “an almost-out-of-reach” potentially optimistic and romantic approach to life and relationships. The three stories all involve K9s... and that is the only thing the three characters have in common. I really can’t tell you more on the plot without killing the story. Also, Gael Garcia Bernal stars in this movie. He has been on several American commercials and also movies including “Babel,” “Motorcycle Dairies,” and “Bad Education.” He is a great actor. I hope you agree.

Scope: Don’t plan on being lightly entertained; it will suck up emotionally and visually. If you like Quenten Tarantino’s script and character profile approach in "Pulp Fiction," then you will love this movie. I don’t have a lot of personality profile info in the scope this time. It’s a hard one to peg because it spans a large spectrum of taste and culture. WARNING-You may need to be partially tolerant to sub-titles and some graphical scenes. I am going to only say a few words about animals (the movie may tie into dog ownership but it isn’t consumed in the plot, it's merely structure to the character development). If you have ever had a dog you loved, you will be taken by this movie. If you ever had the hard decision to have a dog put to sleep, you will connect with this movie. If you ever had your pet killed in an accidental situation or if your pet ran away and never came back, you will “click” with this movie. Also, be prepared for a bitter-sweet end to the story - it does serve up satisfying closure but not in a way you could ever anticipate. It is not a Cinderella, story-book ending. Watch the trailer and take a chance. Would love to hear your feedback since this movie has had a variety of reactions from friends. Please write and let me know!!!!

See rules of blog at very bottom of this post: http://zozfp4.blogspot.com/2007_10_01_archive.html

FP4 entry 20071102

Here we go, FP4 pick of the week

See rules of blog: http://zozfp4.blogspot.com/2007_10_01_archive.html

PICK: “Warm Springs” Director, Joseph Sargent
  Info & Trailer: http://www.blockbuster.com/catalog/movieDetails/264081

Entry: With our national election day coming up next week, I thought it would be prudent to have a pick dedicated to the public servants in the USA… love them or hate them, they are a force that controls the fate of our country and affects world wide influence also… and it is an awesome responsibility. Though the public servants are in the limelight, they do carry the burden of being ridiculed for mistakes and shortcomings far beyond most professional people (sometimes more publicized than movie stars - which usually don’t get the “boot” from their jobs for being human). From a judge to a commissioner, from a senator to a congressman - the responsibility and pressure of delivering results in an almost impossible world of complicated bureaucracy, the task at hand for their jobs can be overwhelming.

(I am already breaking my rules by offering two picks this week. However, the lime light selection this week is the “true pick,” Here we go my friends… and don’t forget to vote next week or else you are not allowed to complain or criticize our public servants!

PICK: “Warm Springs” Director, Joseph Sargent

Info & Trailer: http://www.blockbuster.com/catalog/movieDetails/264081

SYNOPSIS: A short story of Franklin Delano Roosevelt and Eleanor Roosevelt. THIS IS NOT YOUR TYPICAL HISTORY MOVIE, READ ON… This movie is a snap shot during a difficult and trying period in not only the couple’s lives but the nation’s post depression maturity. The movie gives and intrinsic view of one of the most private sections of the couple’s lives and a view into, unarguably, one of the most effective and productive President’s the US has ever seen. The movie is not about bi-partisan and social issues, republican or democrat, war or peace, etc… The movie is set with the advent of FDR’s point in his life where he contracts polio and his heightened career begins a tumultuous tumble as he struggles with the disease. Self absorbed and self-pitying consume his thoughts. However, a glimmer of hope enters his life as he finds a resort in Georgia that has warm springs and rumors that the water has a therapeutic affect on the disease. Though, FDR finds some healing affects of the resort and treatment, his is still unsatisfied and doubts his value in the world. His true remedy is creating an environment/treatment center for polio victims and an avenue for the medical world to study and create solutions for the afflicted. Helping others is helping your own soul and afflictions. The passion for public service starts to reignite at this moment for FDR. Meanwhile, backtracking into the plot, Eleanor refuses to let either his political career or their temporary disintegration of the marriage hurt Franklin’s career and becomes a public figure herself. Though the marriage is on rocky ground, the couple continues a bond through the toughest time of both their lives alongside of the nations own rehabilitation… a parallel that isn’t forthcoming in the script. The couple’s impact of their efforts during his political re-awaking are still felt today through social programs, financial security, public land preservation, occupational training, medical programs, etc…

Scope: You may like this movie if you thoroughly get enthralled with successful and popular public figures. You admire, mentor and study such people and wonder what makes them tick, what allowed them to persevere through failure and trails. Having three friends who have felt the affects of polio, I simply have a small window into how the disease and how it may affects a person’s life. The movie will satisfy the history buff only slightly as it is more of a character development story. You will receive little historical satisfaction from the movie but I STILL would urge you to give it a chance. Though it is a HBO movie, the cinematography, script and actors are top notch. One of the best HBO films I have ever seen… a story of love, marriage, self-confidence and perseverance. Enjoys fine dining and formal occasions. (Even Ozzy Osborne likes to eat caviar once and while, right?) However, you enjoy both the highs AND lows to life. You like jazz and blues. You realize that there is a very spiritual and religious world beyond our physical one. Agnostics and atheists need not apply. In fact, you know the earth and what happens here on earth is merely connected with the intangible. Even the five senses we use through our bodies know when something powerful is in our presence and is either attractive or appalling. You, the SCOPE, the “people-category” of the week, are very connected to your surroundings. You enjoy fine wine and can taste, smell, see every nuance. You stop your car along the side of the road to watch an unusual sunrise on your way to work (even knowing you could be late to work). Also, regarding past movie favorites, you like very formal murder/suspense type movies. So, there you go… I may go to a slasher or experimental type movie next week for the hard core viewer… perhaps…

SYNOPSIS: An obsessive/compulsive perfumer, during Paris’ most romantic eras, finds himself exploring his olfactory desires through his concoctions (and through his client’s pheromones). He pursues a mentor, lands a paid gig, and the story accelerates. He is told an ancient tale from his mentor which becomes his ultimate goal and obsession. The story within the story tells of a strong and mythical scent… an “Ahab’s-great-white-whale” so to speak… a perfume that overtakes the human senses. Enjoy my friends…

-Zoz

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

****A few ground rules and guidelines must be initiated in this blog. Currently, I have 4 friends/co-workers that have given input on the guidelines for this blog and roughly persuaded me into doing this. Also, I think I must explain myself regarding my qualifications. I am an avid cinema and theatre enthusiast. I can enjoy a good play from the renaissance period and also get absorbed into a cutting edge, experimental film. My tastes are varied. Art, meaning the “artificial representation of life,” is created by the artist… a human. In most cases, the artist has no intention of reaching a specific audience. They merely create for the sake of creating, like breathing for the sake of being alive. So my hat’s off to the artist. Even when you have to turn away in disgust from a movie or a painting, the artist has delivered a gift… the gift in the form of a reaction in your mind. Of course we don’t like to be appalled at visual art, but isn’t that part of life in a global sense? Love and tragedy… to be attracted or be repelled to something?

My qualifications are no more than this. I tend to be very extraverted in my personality type with some strange twists. However, the extraverted side is more of a perceptive means of expressing myself. I listen carefully, I read people, and in turn, I like to get to know people from the inside. Diversity is the spice of life and this is very true when it comes to relationships with the world around us. I seek out diversity in friendships. Also, I have been given a gift from the all mighty one. It’s a strange one, but none the less, I have been told it is a gift. The gift is this… as I get to know someone and they ask, “Seen any good movies lately?” The answer is usually very clear in my mind on which movie(s) they should view. I know I don’t always hit the mark, but from my calculations it seems to be around an 80-90% success rate. If you are a nxtbook customer/vendor, and you want a customized pick, just contact me and we will exchange a few questions and then I’ll take a stab at a pick. Keep in mind that if you get the customized pick, my ratio drops greatly from online communications to a much lower level than face-to-face relationships. Custom picks will be addressed to nxtbook customers first since they are the sponsor of this blog (include a live nxtbook url to qualify). I will try to get to others (non nxtbook customers) as I can. I don’t write about this talent to boast… more just to set the stage for the coming attractions and to put a face with the name so to speak. I don’t really see the gift as something to brag about since I am not the artist. I am just that guy that tears the tix in half and sends you through door number 1-20 in the theatre. Also, keep in mind, I am considering guest or fill-in hosts to blog during times of travel or vacation, so voice your interest if this is you.

Here are the weekly (FRIDAY) parameters as set forth by my board of FP4 trustees:

PICK: duh… the movie, with a few details and link

SCOPE: This is the main focus, the Gravicon so to speak. It describes the category of individual I am profiling for the week’s FP4 pick. If the profile doesn’t match you, take a chill pill wait for another post. And if you’re not a match, then don’t expect to be blown away by the pick if you watch it. Also keep in mind, people are not pigeon holed into categories so easily and the picks will be loosely tied to the movie. (Insert sorry clause here). Usually, the “movie connect” success I have had in the past is close and personalized to one person. I have never tried connecting to any mass audience. This is, at best, experimental.

SYNOPSIS: This is the section where I break the movie down, without ruining the film of course, and maybe share my thoughts on why it connects with the audience SCOPE.
